Grisel Miranda Sotelo
This lesson invites students to dive into The House on Mango Street by exploring how symbolism and motifs reveal Esperanza’s journey of identity and self-discovery. I aim to make the learning meaningful by encouraging students to connect the text to their own lives, whether through shared cultural experiences or the universal challenges of coming of age. Through a mix of mini-lessons, guided practice, and a collaborative jigsaw activity, students will engage closely with key vignettes and build confidence in using textual evidence to explain how Esperanza’s sense of self evolves.

Understanding Race-Related Violence in Chapter 6 of The Nickel Boys
This lesson engages 11th-grade AP Literature students in analyzing themes of race, justice, and institutional power in The Nickel Boys through a structured close reading of Chapter 6 and a student-driven gallery walk discussion. Students are given a choice in how they engage with challenging content while participating in collaborative, text-based analysis that prioritizes student voice and structured discourse. Through written and verbal responses during the gallery walk, students build comprehension, accountability, and deeper insight into the author's choices and the characters' experiences.
For the summative assessment of Frankenstein, AP Literature students collaborated in groups to write and perform original reenactments centered on major themes and Gothic literature traits. I chose to showcase this student work because of the creativity, analytical depth, and enthusiasm students brought to their performances, as well as the strong connections they made between the novel’s themes and their own interpretations.
Frankenstein Scene Reenactments
This lesson plan was designed collaboratively with my co-teachers, with each teacher supporting a different summative option. I guided students who selected the poetry pathway, helping them develop personal narratives through poetic structure, reflection, and voice. I chose to showcase this student work because of the immense creativity, passion, and personal connection students brought to the assignment, which was reflected in their writing and performances.
